Located within the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina, the Davidson River Campground is a beloved, highly active destination set along a scenic stretch of the river. The existing ten bathhouses are being replaced with fully updated facilities featuring modern showers and restrooms. The rooms are flexibly designed to allow for any combination of room types.
Drawing from National Park Service and Forest Service design guidelines, the new bathhouses follow a two part architectural approach: a durable CMU and native stone plinth paired with a broad timber roof. The overhanging roof form creates privacy and allows natural daylight to enter. During the day, soft, reflected light illuminates the rooms; at night, all visible light is shielded, preserving night sky visibility.
